India 58-3 against England in fifth Test, need 406 more to win
LONDON, Sept 10, 2018 (BSS/AFP) – India were 58 for three in their second innings, needing a further 406 runs to reach their victory target of 464, at stumps on the fourth day of the fifth Test against England at the Oval on Monday.
KL Rahul was 46 not out and Ajinkya Rahane 10 not out.
The most any side have made to win a Test is the West Indies’ 418 for seven against Australia at St John’s, Antigua, in 2002/03.
Earlier, England declared their second innings on 423 for eight.
Alastair Cook made 147 in his final Test innings before international retirement and England captain Joe Root hit 125, with the pair putting on 259 for the third wicket.
Cook’s innings meant he became just the fifth player in history, after Australia’s Reggie Duff, Bil Ponsford and Greg Chappell and India’s Mohammad Azharuddin to score hundreds in both their first and last Tests.
James Anderson then struck twice to reduce India to one for two as he equalled Australia great Glenn McGrath’s record of 563 for the most Test wickets taken by a fast bowler.
England lead this five-match series 3-1.
