DHAKA, Sep 6, 2018 (BSS) – The United Nations and the World Bank Group have commended the government of Bangladesh for its generosity in welcoming and sheltering the Rohingyas fleeing from the conflict and violence in Myanmar.
In a letter sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said: “We commend your government of Bangladesh for their generosity in welcoming and sheltering those fleeing conflict and violence in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.”
Lauding the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, they said:”Your (Sheikh Hasina’s) personal leadership in garnering global support for the Rohingya people has been remarkable.”
Referring to their visit to Dhaka and Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar from June 30 to July 2, 2018, the UN secretary general and the World Bank Group president said that their joint visit made them even more aware of the important challenges faced by Bangladesh as well as the urgent need for increased support from the international community.
In this regard, the World Bank Group has announced that $480 million in grant-based support is being made available to address the medium-term impact of the crisis, in close partnership with the government of Bangladesh.
“We also appreciated the opportunity to engage with you and your government on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” they said in the letter.
Both the UN secretary general and the World Bank Group president congratulated Sheikh Hasina on the impressive progress Bangladesh has made to graduate from the group of the Least Developed Countries.
“The next few years will be critical for Bangladesh to maintain course on graduation and to accelerate the 2030 agenda implementation. Both the United Nations and the World Bank Group remain committed to support the country in this endeavor,” they said, adding, “We look forward to continuing our strong collaboration,”
