4 killed in Birganj road crash in Dinajpur

RANGPUR, Nov 04, 2017 (BSS)- Four persons, including two women, were killed and five others injured in a road accident at Shalbon point on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway under Birganj upazila in Dinajpur this morning.

“The accident occurred when a pick-up van hit two engine-driven van carts carrying the victims from Jaldhaka upazila in Nilphamari there at 5:45 am killing four persons and injuring five others,” said officer-in-charge (OC) of Birganj Thana Abu Akkas Ahmed.

The deceased were identified as Amullya Chandra Roy, 60, son of Romananda Roy, Habu Ram Roy, 60, son of late Nipu Chandra Roy, Rangila Bala Roy, 55, wife of Laksmi Kanta Roy and Shushila Rani Roy, 50, wife of Shushil Chandra Roy of village Koimari Shibbari under Jaldhaka upazila in Nilphamari district.

The victims were going to ‘Kantajew Mandir’ (Kantaji Temple) in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur to attend the ‘Rush Purnima Festival’ there when the accident took place.

Birganj Thana police has seized the killer pick-up van though its driver managed to flee the scene. The injured persons were admitted to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital and Birganj Upazila Health Complex.

“After recovering the bodies, we have brought those to Birganj Thana for taking next legal steps and the process of filing a case in this connection is progressing,” the OC told the national news agency at 10:30 am.
