80pc banks don’t have skilled manpower to handle cyber attack: BIBM

DHAKA, Nov 2, 2017 (BSS) – Country’s 80 percent banks do not have enough skilled and efficient manpower to face any accidents such as cyber attack, fire in their data centre, said a research report of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIMB).

Associate Professor of BIBM Sihab Uddin Khan presented the report at a workshop ‘Disaster Recovery Management in Online Banks: Challenge and Remedial Measures’ at BIBM auditorium here today.

Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB) Abu Hena Mohammad Razee Hassan attended it as the chief guest while BIBM’s acting Director General Dr Shah Md Ahsan Habib presided over.

BIBM conducted the survey on 27 commercial banks–20 private, two state-owned, two specialized and three foreign banks.

The report said online banking is increasingly becoming popular but there are 11 challenges in managing the disaster or accident in online banking.

There is lack of skilled manpower and coordination between general banking section and ICT section in 80 percent banks, it said, adding that 54 percent banks have shortage of fund for data disaster management.

BB deputy governor Abu Hena Mohammad Razee Hassan said banks must have alternative system to face any accident in online banking.

BB has already prepared a guideline which will have to be implemented properly to protect the interest of the clients of banks, he added.
