RAJSHAHI, June 11, 2021 (BSS)- Local administration in cooperation with the law-enforcing agencies has started a weeklong complete lockdown in the city since 5 pm today aimed at containing the alarming escalation of Covid-19 cases.

Earlier last night, the administration had imposed the lockdown from 5 pm today (Friday) to midnight of June 17 to limit the Covid-19 cases after reviewing the present infection rate compared to the testing and fatality rate.

“We are adamant to enforce the lockdown successfully to save the people from the virus infection,” said Abdul Jalil, Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate Commissioner of Rajshahi, giving an illustration of the enforcement strategy of the lockdown.

He said all sorts of shops and marketplaces and vehicular movement will remain closed. No vehicles from Chapainawabganj, Natore and Naogaon districts will be allowed to enter into Rajshahi. Besides, no vehicles will be allowed to go out from Rajshahi.

However, the restriction on plying of vehicles carrying patients and other emergency goods will not be applicable, he added.

All sorts of public gatherings, including marriage ceremonies, birthday parties, picnic parties, political meetings and religious meetings, will remain shut.

Apart from this, tourists’ spots, resorts, community centres and other amusement places have also been brought under the restriction. Legal action will be taken against those who will be found guilty of violating the restriction, DC Abdul Jalil said.

Meanwhile, huge police forces were deployed at all points in the metropolis in addition to patrolling. Four mobile courts are also working to execute the restriction strictly.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate Abdul Jalil declared the restriction after holding a meeting with the high officials at Circuit House on Thursday evening.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique said the entire Bangladesh is now panicked related to the Rajshahi’s escalating trend of Covid-19. So, preventive measures have become crucial here.

The lockdown is expected to help to limit the spread, he added.
