EZs receive $27.07 billion investment proposals

DHAKA, June 3, 2021 (BSS) – Economic Zones (EZs) across the country have received US$27.07 billion investment proposals from 210 investors.

“Till date, investment proposal worth $27.07 billion from a total of 210 investors has been received in these Economic Zones, of which about $1.60 billion is foreign investment,” said Finance Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal while placing the national budget for fiscal year (FY) 2021-22 today at Jatiya Sangsad.

He said to increase investment and generate employment, steps have been taken to establish 100 Economic Zones across the country, which will provide employment opportunities for an estimated one crore people.

“Approval has already been issued for the establishment of 97 Economic Zones. Production has already begun in 9 Economic Zones and the development work in 28 Economic Zones is in progress, which have provided employment opportunities for around 40,000 employment seekers,” he said.

In addition, he said, employment opportunities for another 8-lakh people will be created.

He said the largest Economic Zone in the public sector ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City’ is being developed in Mirsarai, Sonagazi and Sitakunda Upazilas on 30,000 acres of land as a planned and modern industrial zone.
