Bangladesh on right track to meet nutrition demand: Speaker

RANGPUR, July 22, 2018 (BSS) – Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has said Bangladesh is now working sincerely to meet nutrition demand of its growing population after attaining autarky in food.

“We are producing food to meet our own demand overcoming dependence on others side by side with mostly meeting nutrition of mothers and babies,” she said while addressing an inaugural function at Laldighee Bajitpur village in Pirganj upazila in the afternoon as the chief guest.

The Speaker inaugurated construction works of the advanced calf breeding centre ‘Bull-calf Rearing Unit cum Minilab’ in the function organised by Pirganj Upazila Department of Livestock Services.

The Department of Livestock Services under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is implementing construction works of the ‘Bull-calf Rearing Unit cum Minilab’ on five acres of land at a cost of over Taka 7.70-crore under the Artificial Insemination Activities Extension and Embryo Transfer Technology Implementation Project (third phase).

The Speaker said Bangladesh has achieved laudable success in increasing production of livestock and fisheries resources to meet nutritional demand of growing population on way to build a healthier and developed nation.

“Bangladesh is now at fourth place in producing sweet water fishes in the world,” she said adding that the country would be a developed one if Awami League (AL) was voted to power again with the people’s support.

She said the present government has taken various steps to meet protein demand of the growing population and setting up of the ‘Bull-calf Rearing Unit cum Minilab’ at Pirganj was one of the initiatives.

“After construction of the ‘Bull-calf Rearing Unit cum Minilab’ and implementation of the project, it will be easy to meet nutrition of the people of Rangpur and its adjoining region side by side with creating huge jobs for unemployed youths,” she said.

There would be adequate facilities at the ‘Bull-calf Rearing Unit cum Minilab’ for conducting training for dairy-farm owners as well as farmers to turn them into skilled workforce also for working at all types of dairy farm, she added.

“Like anywhere in the country, comprehensive development has taken place in Pirganj upazila under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The present government is working to improve the life standard of the people,” she said.

The Speaker called upon all concerned to reach benefits of the massive government-led programmes to the grassroots level people.

Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Kazi Wasi Uddin and Project Director Dr Belal Hossain addressed the function as special guests.

Project Director of the Artificial Insemination Activities Extension and Embryo Transfer Technology Implementation Project (third phase) Mahbubur Rahman presided over the function.

Later, the Speaker inaugurated the ‘Dr MA Wazed Miah Gold Cup Football Tournament-2018’ on Pirganj Government High School ground and ‘Three-day Fruit Tree Fair-2018’ on Upazila Parisahd premises at Pirganj municipal town as the chief guest.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib, Senior Vice-president of district AL Chhayadat Hossain Bakul, Acting President of Pirganj upazila AL Advocate Azizur Rahman Ranga, its General Secretary and Pirganj municipality Mayor Tazimul Islam Shamim, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kamal Kumar Ghosh, local AL leaders and elite attended the functions.
