Bithi with her sister Ritu went to their maternal uncle’s house in Kochua village of Shaghata recently.

The incident took place when Bithi and Ritu with their maternal cousin Fatema went to a nearby Char area to see the river Jamuna by a boat at 10 am today.

At one stage, they went down from the boat to bathe in the river Jamuna at noon when one of the sisters started drowning in the river.

“At that time, two other sisters went one after another to save her and all of them drowned in the river near village Kochua in the upazila at noon,” the OC said.

Later, personnel from the nearby Fire Service and Civil Defense Station rescued the sisters with assistance of local people from Chalk Para village point in the downstream of the river in front of Shaghata police station this afternoon.

“We handed over the bodies to parents of the deceased sisters later this afternoon,” the OC said, adding that no case was lodged in this connection.
