5 die on overcrowded ferries in Madaripur

MADARIPUR, May 12, 2021 (BSS)- Five people died and 15 others were injured after being trampled on two overcrowded ferries on the Banglabazar-Shimulia route in Banglabazar area under Shibchar in Madaripur around 12 noon today.

According to the fire service and eyewitnesses, a ferry named Shahparan left Shimulia in Munshiganj around 9 am.

A child died in the middle of the Padma after being trampled due to extra passengers.

Later at around 10 am the ferry Enayetpuri left Shimulia with a few thousand passengers for Banglabazar Ghat, they said, adding that 4 more people died after being trampled in the middle Padma as the ferry was overcrowded due to extra passengers.

At least 15 people were injured at the time, they said.

Madaripur Superintendent of Police Golam Mostafa Russell said it was initially assumed that the overcrowding situation led the causes to deaths.
