India to do best supporting vaccine rollout for neighbors: HC

DHAKA, April 22, 2021 (BSS) – Indian High Commission here today said
New Delhi will continue to do its best to support the vaccine rollout
in neighborhood countries.

“We have said we would do our best to meet everyone’s needs, subject
to limits of production, domestic demands, and other obligations,” a
high commission’s spokesperson told media through What’s app this
evening.

He stated these as the high commission in response to some media’s
report misquoting Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Kuman
Doraiswami. He met a few media personnel at Akhaura border today.

The high commission official said it is important to bear in mind
that there is a huge wave of the pandemic underway in India.

“We can only share what is actually available. And the fact is that
there is a huge amount of demand and not enough supply,” he added.

He assured that as production is increased to meet the increased
demand in India and globally, it will be possible to increase
supplies.

The high commission said Bangladesh has received 7 million doses of
vaccine through its contract, plus 3.3 million as bilateral
partnership gift that is the largest amount sent from India to any
country.

As per the agreement with India, Bangladesh is supposed to receive 5
million doses in each month, but after getting seven million of doses,
Dhaka is yet to receive the next consignment that was scheduled to
arrive here by March.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said Dhaka
keeps confidence in Indian assurance and is hopeful to get all the 30
million doses of vaccine within the timeframe of the agreement.

After fearing that India could get run out of vaccine for its own
citizens while its opposition leaders demanding an immediate
moratorium on the export of vaccines, Dhaka started vigorously hunting
for other sources for getting the high demanded inoculation.
