CHATTOGRAM, April 5, 2021 (BSS) – Strict lockdown began in Chattogram from this morning as the corona situation deteriorated.

The field administration is trying to keep the lockdown effective.

Although different kinds of shops and establishments have been closed in lockdown, different offices, including banks, are open. Due to lack of public transports, rickshaws dominated the roads along with private cars.

Police has set up check posts at the four entry points in the city– Oxygen, Shah Amant bridge area, City Gate area, Oxyzen and Rastarmata area of Kaptai road.

No public transports except private vehicles are being allowed to enter and exit the city in case of emergency.

As there was no public transport on the roads, the city dwellers had to suffer to go to the office. As a result, many office-going people were seen standing on the streets. There were a lot of rickshaws on the roads even though public transport is not running. Industrial workers have been seen leaving for their destinations by their company vehicles.

All government, semi-government, autonomous offices, courts and private offices have remained opened to a limited extent for emergency work. Several organizations have arranged transportation for their employees to and from the office. Police are forcing people not to stay on the streets by miking in different places.

Besides, although there was no public transport, private vehicles were seen plying on the roads.

Nurul Karim, an official of a private company, who was waiting for a car in the City Gate area at around 9.30 am, said, “Today is the first day of the lockdown. The office has not been closed. The company will further reduce the salary in the event of the lockdown. I do not understand what to do.”

Manzur Morshed, Deputy Commissioner of city special branch police, said that the patrol team of law enforcement agencies carried out miking for creating awareness as per the government instructions.

Besides, check posts have been set up at the entry points of the city, he added.

He said that a large number of private cars, motorcycles and rickshaws were plying on the road even though public transports were not running. However, emphasis has been given on ensuring the health rules for all.

According to the Chattogram district administration, various steps have been taken to implement the lockdown as 10 executive magistrates conducted series of raids for ensuring the lockdown.

Deputy Commissioner Mominur Rahman said that no public transport is running on the inner roads of the city. Inter-district bus service has been stopped.

“Air and rail services were also suspended. The shops and markets remained closed. However, emergency and daily necessities shops are open as usual. Miking is going on in different areas to comply with the lockdown,” he added.
