President for enhancing Dhaka-Kabul trade, investment ties

DHAKA, April 5, 2021 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid today stressed on taking joint initiatives at both government and private levels to enhance trade and investment ties between Dhaka and Kabul as Afghanistan’s outgoing envoy Abdul Qayoom Malikzad called on him at Bangabhaban here this evening.

The President said Bangladesh always gives priority to develop relations with all neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan, his Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told the BSS after the meeting.

“Afghanistan can use Bangladesh’s experiences in many development sectors, including women empowerment, basic education, healthcare, sanitation and human resources,” Hamid mentioned.

Bangladesh’s head of the state, during the meeting, lauded the Afghanistan’s recent efforts to establish democracy there.

Referring to the twin mega historic celebrations – – the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — together, President Hamid, said, “The 2021 is a year of great joy and pride for Bangladesh.”

Abdul Hamid, a political veteran, also said that this year Bangladesh got the status of a developing country recommended by the United Nations.

The outgoing Ambassador, on behalf of his government and people, congratulated the government and people of Bangladesh on these historic occasions.

The envoy also lauded the socio-economic development of Bangladesh under the farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of country’s founding father Bangabandhu.

The outgoing Ambassador thanked the President for his cooperation during his assignment here.

BD envoy to Spain calls on President

Later, the newly appointed Ambassador of Bangladesh to Spain Mohammad Sarwar Mahmud paid a courtesy call on President Abdul Hamid here.

During the meeting, the President recalled the contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates in Spain to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.

He asked the envoy to provide optimum diplomatic supports to the expatriates to solve their problems caused by the pandemic COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak.

“They (Bangladeshi expatriate in Spain) should be given priority,” the President suggested.

Abdul Hamid advised the new envoy to take effective initiatives to expand bilateral relations as well as expand trade and investment between Bangladesh and Spain.

The ambassador sought the guidance and all-out cooperation of the President in discharging his duties.

President’s Military Secretary Major General SM Salah Uddin Islam, Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin and Secretary (attachment) Wahidul Islam Khan were present at the meetings.
