DHAKA, Feb 8, 2021 (BSS) – Putting emphasis on conservation of environment for sustainable food security, Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque today said if environment and ecology cannot be conserved, food security will face a threat.

“Soil and water are the key recourses in cultivation. If the quality of these two components cannot be kept, food security will face a threat and environment and ecological balance will get damaged,” he told a webinar on ‘food security and ecology conservation’.

Ecological Sociality of Bangladesh arranged the webinar.Razzaque said the government remains very much conscious about conservation of environment.

“We will have to produce food grains from dwindling land to meet the demand of ever-increasing huge population of the country,” he said adding that productivity of crops should be increased through using necessary insecticides and fertilizers.

“Though we talk about making agricultural production in organic method, it is difficult to avoid use of chemicals in agricultural production in the countries having huge population like Bangladesh, India and China,” he said.

The minister said if the productivity cannot be increased, it will not be possible to ensure food security in only organic method initially for the huge population.

“But we will have to minimize the use of chemicals in cultivation,” he said.

Media personality ShykhSeraj attended the seminar as the chief discussant with Ecological Society of Bangladesh President Prof M Abdul Karim in the chair.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Giasuddin Miah and Ecological Society of Bangladesh General Secretary Prof Md Ruhul Amin addressed it, among others.
