Rokeya Pioneers becomes champions in Mayor Cup T20 cricket

RANGPUR, Jan 19, 2021 (BSS) – Begum Rokeya Pioneers eleven became champions beating Haribhanga Carters eleven by one run in the high voltage final match of the Mayor Cup T-20 Cricket Tournament- 2021 at Rangpur Cricket Garden in the city today.

Rangpur unit of Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh under the management of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) arranged the ten-day tournament marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The tournament kicked off on January 10 with the overall cooperation of Rangpur District Sports’ Association.

Talking to BSS, convener of the tournament management committee and Panel Mayor of Rangpur Mahmudur Rahman Titu said eight teams from the RpCC area participated in two groups in the tournament.

The eight teams are: Haribhanga Carters, Teesta Thunders, Ghaghot Gladiators, Shyamasundari The Beauty, Tajhat Warriors, KD Canal Fighters, Begum Rokeya Pioneers and Chikley Challengers.

The one-time star players of the national cricket team were represented as icon players in the eight participating teams.

They are national under-19 World Cup winning cricketer Akbar Ali in Haribhanga, Sajedul in Teesta, Alauddin in Ghaghot, Ariful in Shyamasundari, Rubeno in Tajhat, Shuvo in KD Canal, Pappu in Begum Rokeya and Nasir in Chikley.

In the final match, Haribhanga Carters eleven opted to bowl after winning the toss and invited Begum Rokeya Pioneers eleven to bat first.

Begum Rokeya Pioneers eleven scored 109 runs losing seven wickets in the stipulated 20 overs in the first innings.

Mohammad Esha of Begum Rokeya Pioneers eleven scored highest 35 runs of 32 balls to become man of the final match.

In reply to winning target of 110 runs, Haribhanga Carters eleven scored 108 runs in 20 overs losing seven wickets with its Captain Akbar Ali scoring highest 37 runs off 37 balls.

Captain Salahuddin Pappu of Begum Rokeya Pioneers eleven became the highest run scorer with 187 runs while its bowler Munna took the highest number of 10 wickets in the tournament.

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa distributed prizes as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan in the chair.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Ruhul Amin Miah, Bangladesh Cricket Board Director and General Secretary of Rangpur District and Divisional Sports Associations Advocate Anwarul Islam and Convener of the Tournament Management Committee Mahmudur Rahman Titu were present.
