Rezaul lauds countrymen’s support for electing Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA, Jan 06, 2021 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, MP, today said the incumbent government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is grateful towards the people of the country for giving her opportunity to run the government for 12 consecutive years.

“The irresistible pace of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has astonished the world. Despite tackling six natural disasters, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s daughter Sheikh Hasina has brought Bangladesh to a unique height in the world and thus Bangladesh has reached a better position across the globe,” he said.

The minister was speaking at a briefing on the occasion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure at the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry’s office at the secretariat here.

Highlighting the development of different sectors of the country, he said, no one in the past could imagine how a country could reach much greater heights but the premier has proved it with her prudent leadership.

Highlighting the development scenario of the fisheries and livestock sector in the last 12 years, he added that milk production was 2.29 million metric tonnes (MT) in 2008-09, it has increased to 10.68 million Metric tonnes in 2019-20.

Meat production was 1.08 million Metric tons 12 years ago while it stands at 7.67 MT in 2019-20, he said, adding that egg production was 4.7 billion now it is 17.36 billion.

He mentioned that fish production in 2010 was 30.62 lakh MT and at present it has increased to 44.88 lakh MT.

The production of ‘Hilsa’ was 2.99 lakh metric tons in 2010 and now the production has increased to 5.33 lakh metric tonnes.

“We are in the fifth place in the world in fish production. Out of 64 endangered species of fish, 24 species have already been brought back in different forms. We have done gene bank for conservation of local fish. This is an unimaginable achievement,” he said.

The ministry won the ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 2020 for its role in increasing fish production, he continued.
