Media can play strong role in women empowerment: Mozammel

DHAKA, Dec 28, 2020 (BSS) – Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque today said media personnel and professionals can play a strong role in women empowerment.

“Bangladesh is recognised as a role model in the national and international arena for women empowerment,” he said.

The minister said while speaking as the chief guest at an open discussion titled ‘Women’s Empowerment and Liberation War and Role of Media Personnel in Building a Prosperous Bangladesh’ at the National Press Club auditorium on the occasion of Bangladesh Journalists’ Rights Forum (BJRF) General Meeting-2020 and its founding anniversary.

Referring to the steps taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to ensure women’s participation in the development of a developed Bangladesh, he said Bangabandhu had laid the foundation for women’s empowerment in the constitution.

Bangabandhu gave 10 percent quota to women in job and 15 reserved seats for women to participate in the parliament.

Referring to the establishment of Bangabandhu Media Complex for the development of the National Press Club and the necessary cooperation for the development of the Press Club, the Liberation War Affairs Minister said the government has provided special financial assistance to the media personnel during the global pandemic Covid-19.

In the coming days, special steps will be taken through the welfare trust so that the media workers can get retirement benefits, he added.

Former Information Adviser to the Prime Minister and Editor of the Daily Observer Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury addressed the meeting as the keynote speaker with President of BJRF and Vice-Chairman of the National Press Club Management Committee Azizul Islam Bhuiyan in the chair.

Among others, General Secretary of National Press Club Farida Yasmin, Veteran Journalist Leader Ashraf Khan, BFUJ Executive Committee Member Nur Jannat Akhter Seema and Women Journalists Association President Nasima Akhter Soma, Former President of Dhaka Journalists Union Kazi Rafiq Gazipur Journalists Union Vice President MA Salam Shant spoke at the meeting.
