Rangpur observes Martyred Intellectuals’ Day befittingly

RANGPUR, Dec 14, 2020 (BSS) – The Martyred Intellectuals’ Day-2020 was
observed here today in a befitting manner paying tribute to martyred
intellectuals and demanding prompt completion of trial of the killers of
martyred intellectuals.

The divisional, district and police administrations, Rangpur Metropolitan
Police (RpMP), political parties, socio-cultural organisations and
educational institutions observed the day abiding by the health directives
amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The district and city Awami League (AL), Ghatok Dalal Nirmul Committee
(GDNC), Shilpokola Academy, Begum Rokeya University, Carmichael College and
other educational institutions observed the day.

The observance began with placing wreaths at the ‘Shahid Muktijoddha
Smritistambha, hoisting of black flag and national flag at half-mast atop all
public and private buildings followed by other programmes since the morning
in the metropolis.

Divisional Commissioner Abdul Wahab Bhuiyan, Additional Divisional
Commissioner (Revenue) Abu Taher Md. Masud Rana, Deputy Inspector General for
Rangpur Range Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner
Md. Abdul Alim Mahmud, Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan, Acting Police
Super Madhusudan Roy, former Commander of district unit of Bangladesh
Muktijoddha Sangshad Mosaddek Hossain Bablu and President of district GDNC
Dr. Mofizul Islam Maantu placed wreaths.

The programmes included wearing of black badges, placing wreaths at mass
graves, special munajats seeking divine blessings for departed souls of the
martyred intellectuals and virtual discussion. The district administration
organised a virtual discussion and competitions on drawing and essay writing
for children virtually marking the Martyred Intellectuals’ Day.

With Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan in the chair, former Head of the
Department of Bengali of Government Begum Rokeya College Professor Mohammad
Shah Alam virtually participated in the virtual discussion as keynote
discussant.

Moderated by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Arafat Rahman,
Acting Police Super Madhusudan Roy, District Secondary Education Officer
Roksana Begum, District Primary Education Officer Shajahan Siddique and
Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Dr. Md. Sarwarul
Haque participated in the discussion.

The district and city units of AL and its associate bodies observed the
day beginning with placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman followed by other programmes.

Led by President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and its General
Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu, leaders of district AL and its
associate bodies hoisted black flag and national flag at half-mast at the
district AL office premises.

Later, the district AL leaders along with leaders of different associate
bodies placed wreaths at ‘Shahid Muktijoddha Smritistambha’ at Surobhi Uddyan
and Bangabandhu’s Mural at Bangabandhu Square in the city.

With President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed in the chair, its General
Secretary of district AL Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu addressed a discussion
arranged on the occasion at district AL office as the keynote speaker.

Office Secretary of district AL Amin Sarker, its Organising Secretary Abu
Talha Biplob, Deputy Office Secretary Zinnat Hossain Lablu, Treasurer Mostoba
Hossain Ripon, Vice-president of district Mohila AL Sathi Begum, its General
Secretary Advocate Zakia Sultana Choity and Acting President of district
Chhatra League Suman Sarker spoke.

The speakers said the Pakistani occupation army and their local
collaborators Al-badars, Al-shams and razakars understood definite defeat and
killed intellectuals on December 14 at the dawn of national independence in
1971 to make the Bangalee nation talentless.
