8th five-year-plan is effective for Bangladesh: Shirin

DHAKA, Dec 09, 2020 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today said the Eighth Five Year Plan (8FYP) is very significant in building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh.

“The main goal of the Eighth Five-Year Plan is to determine the future position after five years from the current position. On the eve of the golden jubilee of independence, the Eighth Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) is the first step in the visionary plan formulated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh by 2041. The Eighth Five Year Plan is very significant for that,” she said.

She was speaking virtually as the chief guest at the consultative meeting on the final draft of the 8FYP organized by the General Economics Division (GED) here.

The speaker added that the first five-year plan was formulated in 1973 during the time of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which was followed by other five-year plans.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is deeply aware of the importance of the five-year plan and the perspective of that plan, so the five-year plans are being formulated continuously, she added.

She said the 8FYP, adopted in 2020, will play an effective role for the celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation and Mujib Borsho.

She went on saying that general issues like education, health, elimination of inequality, economic development, infrastructural development, environmental development, human resource development are the vital-force of the five-year plan.

Successes and achievements in the golden jubilee of independence are leading the nation on the path of ‘Promoting Prosperity’, she continued.

She said the government’s goal is to build a developed and prosperous Bangladesh by 2041, where the poverty rate will come down to 3 percent and the extreme poverty rate will be less than 1 percent.

Planning Minister MA Mannan presided over the function while JS Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah attended it as the special guest.

Amir Hassan Amu, member of parliament (MP), Tofail Ahmed MP, Matia Chowdhury MP, Abul Kalam Azad MP, Shahjahan Khan MP, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, Meher Afroz MP, Abida Anjum Mita MP, Rashed Khan Menon, MP, Simin Hossain Rimi MP, Maqbool Hossain MP and AB Tajul Islam MP also spoke virtually on the occasion.

Member (Senior Secretary) of the GED under Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam presented the final draft of the 8FYP at the event.

Senior officials and dignitaries were also present virtually.
