7 sentenced to death in Atik Ullah murder case

DHAKA, Dec 2, 2020 (BSS) – A Dhaka court has sentenced seven people to death in the murder case of Atik Ullah Chowdhury, former chairman of Konda Union Parishad and convener of the Awami League.

Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict today.

The convicts are Gulzar Hossain, Ashik, Shihab Ahmed alias Shibu, Ahsanul Kabir Emon, Tajul Islam Tanu, Jahangir Kha alias Jahangir and Rafiqul Islam alias Amin alias Tunda Amin.

The court has also sentenced them to seven years imprisonment, a fine of Tk 50,000 and one more year imprisonment for non-payment of fine, each, for burning the body of the victim.

The court acquitted an accused named Shampa as the allegations made against her were not proved.

Among the accused, Shampa, Jahangir and Ahsanul Kabir are in jail while the others are absconding.

According to the case, former chairman of Konda UP and convener of Awami League Atik Ullah Chowdhury went missing on December 10, 2013.

The next day, police recovered a burnt and disfigured body from the side of a hospital in Doleshwar area of South Keraniganj. Later, his son Saidur Rahman Faruk Chowdhury identified the body by checking the papers and ATM card with it.

Saidur filed a murder case with the South Keraniganj Police Station. Following the investigation of the case, on January 31, 2015, the police filed a chargesheet against the eight accused.

On July 2, 2015, the court framed charges against the accused.

11 out of 21 people testified in the case.
