Denmark keen to work with Bangladesh on environmental challenges

DHAKA, Nov 26, 2020 (BSS) – Denmark is interested to work with Bangladesh in dealing with environmental challenges, including climate change, water problems, the increase in green energy use and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The interest was expressed when Danish Ambassador in Dhaka Winnie Estrup Petersen met Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin at the Bangladesh Secretariat here today.

During the meeting, the Danish envoy also expressed keenness to provide support for turning Chittagong seaport into a green port.

He said Denmark will help Bangladesh achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), protect environment and strengthen institutional capacity.

Peterson said Denmark will also help Bangladesh implement environment-friendly programmes in all fields, including energy and agriculture.

Shahab Uddin said Denmark has been providing support to Bangladesh since its independence.

He said the present government is working relentlessly to address the adverse impacts of climate change and check environmental pollution.

Mentioning that Bangladesh is leading in various international forums on climate change, the minister said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is currently serving as the chairperson of Climate Vulnerability Forum.

He said the establishment of a regional office of the Global Center for Adaptation in Dhaka would enable Bangladesh to play a stronger role on climate change issues.

The meeting identified different areas of cooperation between the two countries and emphasised moving forward together in the future.

They also agreed to deepen cooperation between the two countries in the United Nations and other international forums.

Additional Secretary (Environment) Mahmud Hasan and Additional Secretary (Development) Ahmed Shamim Al Razi of the ministry and Commercial Counselor of the Embassy of Denmark Ali Mustaq Butt were present on the occasion.
