JAMALPUR, Nov 19, 2020 (BSS)- Vegetable farming as inter crops in mango and timber field has made a farmer economically profitable in the district.
Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur under ‘Uplift of farmers livelihood specially women and enrichment of environment through improved agro forestry practices in Char land ecosystem of Bangladesh project’ implemented the project on 20 decimal of land of Babul Sheikh at Naovanga Char village in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.
With the support of the project Babul Sheikh planted timber and fruit trees on his land in 2018. He got 50 Akashmoni saplings, 50 mango saplings, fertilizer free of cost. He also got labour cost for plantation of saplings.
Subsequently, RARS provided him four kinds of vegetable seeds to plant on the Akashmoni and mango field. He planted radish, sweet guard, mustard leaf and red amaranth on the field.
The RARS bore all the cultivation cost including fencing one to save the crops from the harm of livestock.
Farmer Babul sheikh told BSS that he cultivated brinjal on the land but it got very poor return. He said after implementing the project it turned profitable for proper use of the land.
His neighbours also feel encouraged to adopt the process of farming for maximum utilisation of land for good profit, he added.
Principal Investigator of the project, Dr Md Saidur Rahman said a farmer in Char area can bring more profit from a land by cultivating vegetables , wood tree and mango tree. He said a farmer will get instant profit from vegetable cultivation and long term profit from timber tree and mango tree.
“In addition to inter crops farming, forestation programme will help for building healthy environment and mango orchard would meet the nutrition deficiency among the Char people”, he added.
