Land depression lies over Faridpur-Madaripur region

DHAKA, Oct 23, 2020 (BSS) – The coast crossing depression moved north eastwards, crossed West Bengal-Khulna coast (near West Bengal-Bangladesh border region) during 12 noon to 6 pm and was centered at 6 pm today over Faridpur-Madaripur region and adjoining areas as land depression, said the met office here today.

Steep pressure gradient over north bay and deep convection is taking place over north bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, according to the latest special bulletin issued by the storm warning center of the meteorological department here.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 44 km of the land depression centre is about 40 kph to 50 kph in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain rough near the depression centre.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no-3.

Under the influence of the land depression, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by the wind driven surge height of 02-04 feet above normal astronomical tide.

Due to the presence of the land depression, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at many places of Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.

All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
