Hope of Bangladesh women’s chess team’s quarter final dashed

DHAKA, Oct. 19, 2020 (BSS)- Bangladesh women’s team failed to reach quarter final of the Women’s Division of the Asian Nations Cup online Chess Championship as they finished the 11th position in the preliminary phase held today.

Bangladesh bagged ten match points from nine matches. As the top eight teams advanced to the quarter-finals, Bangladesh was ruled out due to 11th position. The seventh, eighth and ninth round matches of the women’s section were held today (Monday).

In the seventh round match, Bangladesh women’s team defeated United Arab Emirates by 2.5-1.5 game points. For Bangladesh, WCM Ahmed Walijah beat Rayan Mohammad Ali Hassan and WFM Noshin Anjum beat WCM Fatima Saif Al-Ali of UAE respectively. WIM Sharmin Sultana Shirin split point with Al Ali Aisha Saif and WIM Rani Hamid lost to Mariam Essa.

In the eighth round, Bangladesh lost to Jordan by 3-1 game points. Only WIM Shirin managed to win against Lana Haymoor of Jordan. WCM Ahmed Walijah, WIM Rani Hamid and WFM Noshin lost against Raya Alnaimat, Alattar Ghayda and Boshra Alshaeby of Jordan respectively.

In the ninth or final round matches, Bangladesh defeated Japan by 3-1 game points. WIM Shirn, WCM Walijah and WFM Noshin won against WCM Sakai Azumi, Takayasu Melody and Misawa Yuki of Japan respectively. WFM Nazrana Khan Eva lost to WCM Hoshino Meilin of Japan.

India emerged first with sixteen points and Philippines became second while Iran placed at third with thirteen points each.

Vietnam placed at fourth, Mongolia became fifth and Indonesia became sixth with 12 points each while Sri Lanka became 7th and Kyrgyzstan became 8th with 11 points each.

The top eight teams will play in the quarter finals. Quarter finals of both sections will start from October 23 from 12 PM (BST).
