Sheikh Russel’s birthday observed

DHAKA, Oct 18, 2020 (BSS) – The 57th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed today.

Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi here.

Russel along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was brutally killed on August 15 in 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School.

Different socio-cultural organisations, including the associate bodies of the ruling Awami League, took various programmes to observe the birthday of Sheikh Russel.

To mark the day, Awami League placed a wreath at the graves of the all martyrs, including Sheikh Russel, of the 15 August carnage in 1975, in the city’s Banani graveyard.

Besides, fateha, milad and doa mahfil were also arranged there by the party members.

On the occasion of the birthday, the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations and various social and cultural organisations undertook extensive programmes.

Various organisations including Awami League paid their glowing tributes by laying wreaths at the graves of the martyrs killed of August 15, including Sheikh Russel, at Banani graveyard this morning.

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Awami League presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury and Shajahan Khan, Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Organising Secretaries SM Kamal Hossain and Advocate Afzal Hossain, Awami League cultural affairs secretary Asim Kumar Ukil, Publicity and Publications Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, AL Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Engineer Md Abdus Sabur, AL office secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, Central committee member Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and AL deputy office secretary Sayem Khan, among others, were present on the occasion.

Later, Dhaka North and South units of AL, Awami Jubo League, Awami Swechchhasebak League, Tati League, Sramik League, Chhatra League, Mohila Awami League, Jubo Mohila League, Mohila Sramik League, Krishak League, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and other social and cultural organisations paid homage to Shaheed Sheikh Russel by laying wreaths.

Later, a milad-mahfil was held at the Banani graveyard mosque in memory of the martyrs of August 15, including Sheikh Russel.

Leaders of Awami League and its allied organisations participated in it.

On the occasion of Sheikh Russel’s birthday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled a ‘mural’ of Shaheed Sheikh Russel and inaugurated ‘Shaheed Sheikh Russel Bhaban’ on the premises of Sheikh Russel’s school University Laboratory School and College through video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban.

In this virtual event, she also unveiled an exhibition of animated documentary ‘Bubur Desh’ based on Shaheed Sheikh Russel and two books titled ‘Sheikh Russell Amader Abeg’ and ‘ Smritir Patay Sheikh Russel’ published on Sheikh Russel’s biography.

The Prime Minister also participated in some other programmes including distribution of prizes to the students who got GPA-5 in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam, distribution of laptops among the poor and meritorious students, providing scholarships and watching video clip of the activities of Sheikh Russel Jatiyo Shishu-Kishore Parishad at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre under the arrangement of Sheikh Russel Shishu-Kishore Sangsad through video conferencing.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, the Swechchhasebak League organised a discussion at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in the capital.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader joined the meeting through video conference from his residence.

AL’s associate body Awami Swechchhasebak League President Nirmal Ranjan Guha presided over the function.

Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell and Swechchhasebak League General Secretary AKM Afzalur Rahman spoke on the occasion.

On the occasion of the 56th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Postal Department has issued a commemorative stamp worth Taka 10, opening an envelope worth Tk 10 and a data card worth Tk 5.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar unveiled commemorative stamp and opening envelope and released data cards from his office in the city.

Bangladesh Shishu Academy organised a children’s rhyme recitation, self-written poetry recitation and discussion meeting at the Shishu Academy auditorium in the capital on the occasion of Sheikh Russel’s birth anniversary.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nesa Indira addressed the function as the chief guest.

Additional Secretary Farida Parveen, Director General of Bangladesh Shishu Academy Jyoti Lal Kuri and Department of Women’s Affairs Director General Parveen Akhtar were present on the occasion.

Earlier in the morning, the Ministry of Women and Children affairs paid homage to Sheikh Russel at Banani graveyard.
