DHAKA, Oct 12, 2020 (BSS) – Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC)
today barred lawyer Eunus Ali Akond from practicing law for three months for
contempt of court.

A seven-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain
passed the order, also finding the accused Taka 25 thousand, to suffer 15
days behind bars.

“All including the lawyers should get alert after this order. It is kind of
a message from the apex court,” Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)
secretary Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal said.

The court came up with the order after holding hearing on the matter on
October 11. Akond during the hearing offered unconditional apology.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, senior jurists Khandaker Mahbub Hossain,
Abdul Matin Khasru, Joynul Abedin, AJ Mohammad Ali, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin
Khokon and Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal took part in the hearing, among
others.

Former Additional Attorney General Murad Reza on September 27 brought
Akond’s Facebook status to Supreme Court’s attention, saying the lawyer
committed serious contempt of court by his status regarding the judiciary.

Later the court took opinions of senior lawyers like Fida M Kamal, Monsurul
Haque Chowdhury, SCBA President and now Attorney General AM Amin Uddin,
secretary Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Monjil Morshed.

The court had suspended Akond from practicing law at the apex court for two
weeks and had asked BTRC to block his Facebook account after deleting the
status.
