Rezaul for development of fisheries sector to boost economic prosperity

DHAKA, Oct 11, 2020 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul
Karim today laid emphasis on development of fisheries sector for boosting
economic prosperity in the country.

“There is no alternative to expanding fish production as it will help meet
the nutritional demand of people alongside expediting economic progress,” he
said.

The Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a
workshop titled ‘Annual research progress review and planning report of the
Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI)’ at Bangladesh Agricultural
Research Council auditorium at Farmgate in the capital, an official release
said.

The fisheries sector can also create job opportunities for the unemployed
youths of the country, he said, adding the fisheries sector can also play a
huge role in creating entrepreneurs, who will improve the rural livelihoods
by eradicating the poverty.

Referring to the success of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI)
in reviving endangered native fishes, the minister said that the Fisheries
Research Institute has been creating new opportunities to overcome the crisis
in fish production.

Speaking as special guest, Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud
said that through extensive research, hilsha fish production will increase
significantly in the country.

Among others, Director General of Fisheries Department Kazi Shams Afroz,
Additional Secretary of the Ministry Shyamal Chandra Karmakar and Md.
Taufiqul Arif, senior officials of the ministry, Fisheries Department and
BFRI, fisheries scientists, extension workers, university teachers,
representatives of government and non-government organizations, were present
at function.
