DHAKA, Sept 24, 2020 (BSS) – State Minister for Shipping Khalid
Mahmud Chowdhury today called upon all concerned to make united
efforts to ensure safe and cheap waterways for people.
He was addressing a virtual discussion marking the World Maritime
Day 2020 at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Bhaban
in city’s Motijheel here.
Department of Shipping and BIWTA arranged the discussion with the
global title of the day ‘Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable
Planet’.
Department of Shipping Director General Commodore A Z M Jalal Uddin
chaired the meeting, while Chairman of Parliamentary Standing
Committee on Shipping Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam, Bir Uttam, spoke it
virtually.
Shipping Secretary Mohammed Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury and BIWTA
Chairman Commodore Golam Sadeq also addressed it.
The state minister said if the waterways can be made more popular,
comfortable and cheaper, it will become as an alternative to road
communication.
He urged the regulatory agency for proper application of laws to
maintain discipline in waterways.
