Quota reform platform chief suspended over rape charge

DHAKA, Sept 23, 2020 (BSS) – Central body of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council (BSRC), a platform of quota reformation movement activists, has suspended organisation’s Convener Hasan Al Mamun over rape charge.

Mamun has been relieved from the forum temporarily by a decision of their executive council today, said a press release issued by Muhammad Rashed Khan, joint convener of the platform.

A three-member probe body, consists of BSRC DU unit President Bin Yamin Molla and two Joint Conveners of central committee Tarek Rahman and Rafia Sultana, was also formed to investigate the allegation. The body has been asked to submit its findings within 48-hours.

Mamun and five others were sued in two separate cases lodged by the same plaintiff on Sunday and Tuesday at Lalbagh police station under Women and Children Repression Prevention act and Kotwali police station under Digital Security Act respectively.

The other accused are former vice-president (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Nurul Haque Nur, Nazmul Hasan Sohag, Saiful Islam, Nazmul Huda and Abdullah Hil Baki, all are fellow of BSRC.

Meanwhile, a group of 2016-17 session students of DU formed a human chain at the base of Raju memorial sculpture inside DU campus demanding justice to the victim.

Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council, which spearhead quota reformation movement in 2018.

Later, the platform was renamed as Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council (BSRC) on February 17 this year.
