COVID-19 cases cross 11,500 in Rangpur division

RANGPUR, Sept 20, 2020 (BSS) – The number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases crossed the 11,500 mark today in Rangpur division despite a consistently declining trend in the daily number of infections in the past three weeks.

“The number of coronavirus cases rose to 11,538 with 50 more infections reported after testing 376 samples at Rangpur and Dinajpur on Saturday, ” Focal Person of COVID-19 and Assistant Director (Health) for Rangpur division Dr. ZA Siddiqui told BSS today.

The district-wise break up of the 11,538 patients currently stands at 2,721 in Rangpur, 591 in Panchagarh, 1,015 in Nilphamari, 839 in Lalmonirhat, 884 in Kurigram, 1,064 in Thakurgaon, 3,297 in Dinajpur and 1,127 in Gaibandha districts.

Since the beginning, the number of recovered COVID-19 patients rose to 10,223 with the recovery of a high number of 46 more infected people in all eight districts of the division on Saturday.

“The average recovery rate among the total 11,538 infected patients stands at 88.60 percent in Rangpur division,” he said.

The 10,223 recovered patients include 2,345 of Rangpur, 524 of Panchagarh, 957 of Nilphamari, 720 of Lalmonirhat, 812 of Kurigram, 761 of Thakurgaon, 3,160 of Dinajpur and 944 of Gaibandha districts.

With one more death reported from Rangpur on Saturday, the total number of fatalities rose to 207 in the division.

The district-wise break up of the 207 fatalities stands at 47 in Rangpur, 71 in Dinajpur, 20 each in Thakurgaon and Nilphamari, 14 each in Gaibandha and Kurigram, 12 in Panchagarh and nine in Lalmonirhat districts.

“The average casualty rate among the total 11,538 infected patients currently stands at over 1.79 percent in the division,” he said.

Since the beginning, a total of 65,336 collected samples of Rangpur division till Saturday night, and of them, 11,538 were found COVID-19 positive with an average infection rate of about 17.66 percent.

“Currently, the recovery rate (88.60 percent) of COVID-19 patients is 5.01 times higher than the infection rate (17.66 percent) in the division,” Dr. Siddiqui added.

Talking to BSS today, Acting Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Sultan Ahmed said 143 more people were put in quarantine at home or institutions and 161 others released in the division during the last 24 hours till 8 am today.

“Among the total 11,538 COVID-19 patients, 86 are undergoing treatments at isolation units of different hospitals after recovery of 10,223 patients and 207 deaths while 1,022 remaining in home isolations,” he said.

Since the beginning, a total of 78,009 people of the division were put in quarantines, and of them, 73,573 released and 4,436 are currently remaining in home or institutional quarantines.

Talking to BSS, Chief of Divisional Coronavirus Service and Prevention Task Force and Principal of Rangpur Medical College Professor Dr. AKM Nurunnabi Lyzu said the COVID-19 infection rate continues declining in the last three weeks in the division.

“Everyone should abide by health directives of the government, wear masks while remaining outside of homes and maintain physical distance to further improve the situation and prevent further spread of COVID-19 infections,” he added.
