Two attackers of Ghoraghat UNO put on 7-day remand

RANGPUR, Sept 5, 2020 (BSS) – Two among three arrested attackers of
Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam and her father
Omar Ali Sheikh were taken on seven-day police remand this evening in
Dinajpur, police said.

Earlier, Investigating Officer of the case and Officer-in-Charge of
the Detective Branch (DB) of Dinajpur Imam Jafar produced them before
the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dinajpur Shishir Kumar Basu
with a 10-day remand prayer.

After hearing on the prayer, the judge granted remand for seven days
for each of the accused — Nabiul Islam, 36, and Santu Kumar Biswas,
28 — for interrogation by the DB Police.

Santu Kumar Das and Nabirul Islam are residents of Chak Babunia
Biswanathpur village in Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur and both of them
are painters.

Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 arrested three persons
including prime suspect Asadul Haque, 35, of Sagarpur village in
Ghoraghat upazila Dinajpur on Friday in connection with the gruesome
attacks on the Ghoraghat UNO and her father.

The DB Police of Dinajpur did not receive prime accused Asadul Haque
till the afternoon and could not produce him before the court with the
other two by this afternoon.

However, after his necessary treatments at Rangpur Medical College
Hospital since Friday afternoon, the elite force handed over Asadul
Haque to Ghoraghat police station this evening from where he was
handed over to the DB Police in Dinajpur tonight.

The Investigating Officer is expected to produce prime accused
Asadul Haque before the court with a remand prayer tomorrow.

Earlier in a press briefing at RAB-13 headquarters in Rangpur on
Friday evening, Commanding Officer Reza Ahmmed Ferdous said that the
three arrested persons admitted their involvement in the gruesome
attacks on the UNO and her father.

“The elite force soon started a shadow investigation into the case
filed by Sheikh Farid Uddin, the UNO’s brother, with Ghoraghat police
station of Dinajpur in connection with the attacks on Thursday,” he
said.

After conducting hectic raids in different places in Dinajpur
district on Thursday and Friday, the elite force arrested the
criminals directly involved in the attacks conducted on Thursday in
the early morning.

“The investigating agencies need to conduct a comprehensive
investigation into the case to unearth the real motive of the
attacks,” Reza said, adding that RAB-13 held six persons for
integration and released three of them after finding their no
involvement.

In the meantime, Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdul Wahab Bhuiyan has
formed a three-member probe committee to investigate into the incident
with Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Zakir Hossain as
its chief.

The committee will submit its report within the next seven working days.

Deputy Inspector General of Police for Rangpur Range Devdas
Bhattacharya told reporters that the investigating agencies will
unearth the motive behind the gruesome attacks and bring all culprits
to book.
