Bangladesh envoy pays homage to Pranab Mukherjee on PM’s behalf

NEW DELHI, Sept 1, 2020 (BSS) – On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mohammad Imran today paid rich tributes to former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, who died here yesterday.

The high commissioner paid the homage, on behalf of the Bangladesh premier, by laying floral wreaths at the portrait of the late Indian President at his official residence this morning.

After placing the wreaths, the envoy stood in solemn silence for sometimes as a mark of profound respect to the memory of Mr. Mukherjee and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Later, Imran said Bangladesh has lost a true friend at the death of Mr. Mukherjee, who had a deep-rooted relation with Bangladesh. “He (Pranab Mukherjee) had a good relation with Bangladesh from the country’s Liberation War in 1971,” he said.

Talking to the high commissioner, Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for expressing sympathy to their family during the critical time.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi will organise a condolence meeting in memory of Pranab Mukherjee at the mission premises tomorrow afternoon, said a press release today.

The former president died on Monday at an army hospital here after fighting for life for the last 21 days from August 10 following a brain surgery to remove a blood clot. Since then, Mr. Mukherjee, who was also Covid-19 positive, was in deep coma.

The funeral of the veteran politician was held with full state honour here this afternoon.
