Flood situation improves in Brahmaputra, Ganges basins
DHAKA, July 31, 2020 (BSS) – The flood situation improved in the Brahmaputra and Ganges basins today due to dwindling of onrush of hilly water from upstream.
However, major rivers of the Brahmaputra basin were still flowing above the danger level at eight points in five northern districts, while sporadic incidents of riverbank erosion were reported in different areas during the last 24 hours ending 9 am today, according to the officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
The Brahmaputra was flowing 15 cm above the danger mark at Chilmari point, while the Dharla River 34 cm above at Kurigram point and Ghaghot River was flowing 23 cm above the danger level at Gaibandha point.
The Jamuna was flowing 37 cm above the danger level at Fulchhari point, 48 cm above at Bahadurabad point, 55 cm at Sariakandi point, 33 cm at Kazipur point and 38 cm point at Sirajganj point.
The Teesta was flowing 10 cm bellow at Dalia point and 24 cm point at Kawnia point at 9 am today.
BWDB executive engineer for Kurigram and Lalmonirhat divisions Ariful Islam said riverbank protection works continue at several vulnerable points in the two districts.
Flood situation continues improving in the Ganges basin as water levels of the rivers in the basin receded for the second consecutive day today, BSS Rajshahi correspondent reports.
Of the 30 river points monitored in the Ganges basin, water levels decreased at 20 stations, while went up at 10 stations at 9 am today, easing the flood situation in the chars (shoals) and low-lying areas.
The rivers were flowing below the danger level at 24 points in the basin, while above danger mark at six points this morning, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The falling trend of water levels was recorded at the points of Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria in the past 24 hours ending 9 am today, BWDB superintending engineer Mukhlesur Rahman told BSS.
He said water levels of the Ganges River further decreased by one cm each at Pankha point in Chapainawabganj and Hardinge Bridge point, four cm at Rajshahi point and 14 cm at Talbaria point, while the water level of the Padma River receded by 11 cm at Goalunda point.
The Ganges River was flowing 168 cm, 164 cm, 84 cm and 62 cm below the danger level at Pankha, Rajshahi, Hardinge Bridge and Talbaria points respectively, while the Padma River was flowing 91 cm above the danger mark at Gualundo point, Mukhlesur said.
Besides, the water level of the Korotoa River and the Jamuna River in the Brahmaputra basin flowing through Bogura and Sirajganj districts was reported a further receding trend this morning, forecasting further improvement of flood situation there within the next couple of days.
FFWC executive engineer Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said the water level of the Korotoa River receded by seven cm at Bogura point and nine cm at Chak Rahimpur.
The river was flowing 155 cm and 43 cm below the danger mark at the two stations respectively this morning, he added.
The Jamuna River further decreased by 12 cm at Sariakandi point in Bogura, 15 cm at Kajipur point in Sirajganj and 9 cm at Sirajganj point and the river was still flowing 55 cm, 33 cm and 38 cm above the danger mark at Sariakandi, Kazipur and Sirajganj points respectively.
The water level of the Gur River receded by four cm at Shingra point in Natore and the river was flowing 80 cm above the danger mark.
Water level of the Mohananda River further decreased by four cm at Rohanpur point in Chapainawabganj and the river was flowing 90 cm below the danger mark.
The Atrai River was flowing seven cm below the danger mark at Atrai point in Naogaon with an 11 cm fall afresh, while 239 cm below the danger mark with 77 cm rise at Mohadevpur point in Naogaon.
