BGB protests BSF’s claim over cattle smuggling

DHAKA, July 19, 2020 (BSS) – The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today protested a report carried in an Indian newspaper last week, terming it as “totally ‘baseless”.

“The report headlined — BSF: Border Guard Bangladesh supports cattle smuggling — it totally ‘false and baseless’,” BGB said in a statement today.

Quoting BSF’s South Bengal Frontier DIG SS Guleria’s statement issued on July 6, the report said: “The BSF is claiming that the BGB is giving all-out support to the cattle smuggling from India”.

Reiterating the BGB’s position on the Indian cattle smuggling, the border watchdog said that it has taken tougher measures in preventing cattle smuggling from India in line with the government’s policy to protect the interest of the local livestock farmers.

Involving the representatives from local administrations, police, local public representatives, local leaders and community, BGB has stepped up patrol and vigilance in border areas, the statement said.

The BGB said: “It creates undoubtedly a lot of queries about the inactivity of the BSF behind gathering huge cattle on the Indian soil bordering Bangladesh by the Indian cattle smugglers and they are smuggling the cattle to Bangladesh by crossing rivers.”

Actually the news might be published in the Indian media aiming to conceal the failure of the BSF in checking cattle smuggling from India, said the Bangladeshi paramilitary force, which is primarily responsible for defending 4,427-km border of Bangladesh.

The Indian smugglers are being very enthusiastic to smuggle cattle into Bangladesh for making profit, but they Indian incur a huge loss to the local farmers, the statement said.

The report published in the Indian Express on July 13, saying “the cattle smuggling has increased in the Bangladesh-India border areas on the occasion of the Eid-ul Azha”.
