Vast areas inundated at Harirampur

MANIKGANJ, July 19, 2020 (BSS) – A vast area of Harirampur upazila of the district inundated including the upazila parishad complex as water level of the river Padma is continued to rise.

The flood water hampered the communication of the upazila complex area as three parts of the main road of the upazila sadar collapsed. About 15,000 families of the upazila have been marooned.

Some government offices including Harirampur Police Station have been inundated with the flood water.

Bokchar, Vauardangi, Bahirchar villages of Ramkrishnapur union, Velabad, Harukandi, Chandpur of Harukandi union, Ujanpara, Vatipara, Bahadurpur villages of Gopinathpur union, Kanchonpur, Baliakandi,Shuvokandi, Boiddakandi of Kanchanpur union, Patgram, Chhilimpur, Harihardia, Kazikanda, Gangaproshad, Rustampur of Lesragonj union, Boyra, Darikandi, Daskandi of Dhulshura union, Kamlapur, Nilgram, Abidhara, Gangarampur, Shyampur, Rameshwarpur of Dhulshura union and the vast areas including Alinagar village of Azimnagar union were inundated.

Asaduzzaman Chunnu, Chairman of Harukandi union, said about five hundred houses of his union were inundated with the rising water of the Padma.

Sayed Hasan Imam, chairman of Lesragonj union, said most of the houses of ten villages of his union were inundated as it is situated on the char of the Padma river.

Younus Uddin Gazi, Chairman of Kanchanpur union, said most of the areas of his union have already been inundated.

Mohammad Mainuddin, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board,
Manikgan said “Now the water of the Padma is flowing above 70 cm of the danger level at Aricha point adding that the water of the rivers of Manikganj may rise further when the water of north regions will come down”.

Dewan Sayedur Rahman, Upazila Chairman of Harirampur, said the most of
the low land areas of the district were flooded and the livelihood of the people already been disrupted.

Sabina Yasmin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Harirampur said all necessary preparations have been taken to tackle the flood situation.

She said twenty Primary Schools including two shelter centers have been keeping ready for flood victims. Dried food items were distributed among 400 families of four unions of the upazila. In turn food and financial support will be provided to the flood victims of the upazila.
