DHAKA, July 9, 2020 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said the government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has taken a tougher stance against corruption and irregularities.
He said this while addressing a coronavirus safety gears distribution programme through videoconferencing from his official residence here.
AL relief and social welfare sub-committee arranged the relief and coronavirus safety gears distribution programme at AL president’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital.
Quader said the government has taken a firm stance against the irregularities and graft, and the “purification campaign” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had introduced in the country will continue.
The premier had launched the anti-casino drive and following this a drive continues against the vicious circle involved in corruption and irregularities in the country’s health sector, Quader said.
“None from outside helps the government identify all these irregularities. But, on its own initiative, the government has launched a harsher drive to stop irregularities,” he added.
The AL general secretary said the “purification campaign” of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government will continue against various irregularities in the health sector, particularly in the hospitals issuing fake certificates of COVID-19 sample tests and plasma donation, procuring safety equipment and hospital equipment, and other sectors involved in the health sector.
He said the wrongdoers have no political identity and they must be brought to justice – no matter how powerful they are.
Quader warned that the government has taken a zero tolerance policy against those involved in doing business over the helplessness of people and cheating them.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, he said, the ruling Awami League has stood by the destitute and jobless people and set a unique example of humanity.
Standing by the helpless people is a seven-decade tradition of the Awami League, he added.
The road transport and bridges minister said the AL has already reached food aid to the doorsteps of around 1.25 crore people of the country, while over Taka 10.5 crore was distributed among the poor and destitute people as cash assistance.
Apart from the food and cash assistance, Qauder said, the Awami League has been providing other assistance, including safety equipment, and telemedicine and ambulance services for them in various ways.
“The leaders and activists of the AL’s associate organisations helped the farmers harvest their paddy. Now the AL leaders and workers have stood by the flood victims,” he said.
The AL general secretary called upon the party men to help the flood-hit people.
He expressed gratitude to AL relief and social welfare sub-committee for creating public awareness and distributing safety items amid the coronavirus crisis.
Following the distribution of various COVID-19 items, Quader said, oxygen generators and other equipment were distributed today among the hospitals in the virus affected and the flood-hit districts.
AL presidium members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organising secretaries BM Mozammel Haque, Mirza Azam, SM Kamal Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain Shafiq, relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, liberation war affairs secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, health affairs secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana, deputy office secretary Sayeem Khan and central committee members Shahabuddin Farazi and Anisur Rahman were, among others, present at the programme.
AL relief and social welfare sub-committee distributed the coronavirus preventive materials among the representatives of the hospitals.
