DHAKA, Aug 24, 2017 (BSS) – Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif today said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman were behind the grenade attack on an AL rally on August 21, 2004, aimed at eliminating this party from politics.

“The grenade attack did not take place without the consent of the then head of the government, Begum Zia. You (Begum Zia) can’t avoid the responsibility of the incident and you will have to face trial,” he said, speaking as chief guest at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) here.

Ivy Rahman Mritthu Barshiki Udjapan (death anniversary observance) Committee organized the discussion marking the 13th death anniversary of Begum Ivy Rahman, wife of former President Zillur Rahman and former president of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League.

Ivy Rahman received grievous injuries during a grisly grenade attack on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21 in 2004 and succumbed to her injuries on August 24.

About the court verdict on the 16th constitutional amendment, Hanif said, “We didn’t make any comments regarding the verdict and we won’t talk against the verdict…we will file a review petition.”
