Local public representative sets instance by building houses for poor

DHAKA, June 06, 2020 (BSS) – As poor people face very poor housing arrangement, a public representative has come up with a plan to construct semi-pucca houses for them to rehabilitate the distressed in Sylhet.

Nandira Union Parishad (UP) chairman of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet district has set an example by constructing about 30 semi-pucca houses for the poor people of the area at a cost of Taka one lakh for each house. But there was a plan to construct tin-shed houses with the same amount under the Ashrayan Project- 2.

The government is providing shelter through constructing tin-shed houses to rehabilitate poor people. A total of 1.70 lakh poor people would get tin-shed houses under the Ashrayan Project-2.

Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nazmus Sakib said honesty and cordiality of Nandirgaon UP chairman S Kamrul Hasan Amirul would encourage others. Everyone should take lesson from him (Kamrul), he added.

There is a plan to construct 356 houses under the project in Goainghat upazila. As per the project, every tin-shed house would be 16 feet in length and 10 feet in width along with a barinda of 5 feet and a bathroom.

Kamrul said after getting the allocation for the project, he talked with other members of his parishad and local contractors while they informed him that a semi-pucca house could be built with the same cost.

Later, Kamrul talked with the UNO and constructed semi-pucca houses for the poor people of the area.

He hoped that the people who got the houses could live about 20 years to 25 years without any tension.

“Actually, I took the decision as we don’t need extra money to construct semi-pucca house,” the UP chairman said.

Minara Begum, a beneficiary who is also a widow, said, “I was leading a distressful life along with my four children after the death of my husband. Now, I’m happy to get a semi-pucca house at my own land during the prevailing Corona situation”.

“We got a safe shelter for the government initiative. I was helpless with the children. But, now we got a semi-pucca house with the help of UP chairman. I’m really grateful to them,” she added.

Ruhul Amin, a neighbor of Minara, said she (Minara) became helpless after the sudden death of her husband. This is really a best initiative of the present government as it (government) is providing shelter to the poor people, he added.

Bhanu Bibi, another beneficiary of Angarjur village, said she had a house of jute chalk on her land. But now the government has provided a semi-pucca house which is really unbelievable, she added.

Along with rehabilitation, the people have received training on sewing and poultry farming to become self-employed.

Kamrul said, not only the 30 families, every distressed people of the area has received government support during the Coronavirus pandemic situation.

Doshgaon High School and College Principal Md Khalilur Rahman said the UP chairman properly utilized the allotted money for the distressed people of the area.

Goainghat Upazila project implementation officer Shirshendu Purkaysto said the UP chairman of Nandiorgaon has set an example. He utilized the money properly and the poor people have been benefited through his works.
