Bangladesh seeks Japanese support for constructing earthquake-proof
building

DHAKA, Feb 19, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh government has sought Japanese
cooperation to construct earthquake-resistant buildings to minimize the
damages caused by earthquake.

“We need technical and financial support from Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA) to provide training to our architectures and
engineers for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings,” said State
Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr M Enamur Rahman when a four-
member JICA representative led by its Bangladesh Chief Hitioshi Hirata called
on him at his ministry, said a ministry press release here today.

Rahman said, “We want to make the country into an earthquake resistant one
like Japan and that’s why all the old buildings would be renovated to make
them earthquake safe.”

During the meeting, they also discussed about the progress of different
JICA aided development projects being implemented under the Ministry of
Disaster Management and Relief. The JICA representatives expressed their
satisfaction about the progress of the ongoing projects.

Lauding various development programmes of Bangladesh government, the JICA
chief said Bangladesh is now a role model in disaster management. He assured
of providing necessary support to Bangladesh for constructing earthquake-
proof building.
