JS passes Bangladesh Lighthouse Bill-2020

SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 12, 2020 (BSS) – Bangladesh Lighthouse Bill-2020 passed in the parliament in an attempt to ensure safe navigation and risk-free rescue operation at the coastal sites of the sea in the country.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury moved the bill which was unanimously passed by voice votes in the house with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Piloting the bill, the minister said the new act would replace the existing Lighthouse Act-1927 as the new act would help keeping maintenance and controlling over the lighthouses in the country.

According to the proposed bill, it has been prepared as a time-befitting one for maintaining and controlling the lighthouses which set up in different coastal regions.

Earlier, the state minister placed the bill in the parliament on January 15.

There are now three lighthouses in different coastal areas of the country, it said, adding that process is underway to set up four more lighthouses in the coastal areas.
