ICC seeks PM’s support for various events

DHAKA, Jan 20, 2020 (BSS) – Chief Executive Officer of International Cricket Council (ICC) Manu Sawhney today sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s support over the arrangement of various championships and events of the ICC.

The ICC chief executive officer sought the cooperation when a delegation of the cricket world body led by him paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the latter’s Jatiya Sangsad office here this evening.

PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

During the meeting, he said, the ICC team apprised the prime minister of different ICC events to be arranged from 2024 to 2031.

Appreciating the development of Bangladesh’s cricket, Manu Sawhney said the cricket is a popular game and it has also economic and social impacts.

“Cricket is a valuable asset for younger generation as social welfare can be made through the game,” he said, adding that the cricket has now turned into an industry.

In reply, the prime minister lauded the proposals of the ICC delegation.

Sheikh Hasina said it is her policy to promote women in sports particularly cricket. “The Bangladesh Women Cricket Team is the Asian Champion,” she said.

The premier said her government had initially to face social obstacles to bring women in sports.

PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus and Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan Papon were present at the meeting.
