Nasim urges BNP not to boycott city polls

DHAKA, Jan 12, 2020 (BSS) – Urging BNP not to boycott the upcoming city
polls, Spokesman of 14-party alliance Mohammed Nasim today urged the party to
contest the elections slated for January 30 till the closing stages.

“BNP is habituated to quitting the election from the middle of it. I am
urging them to stay at the fields of city corporations’ elections till the
end rather fleeing from the poll race,” said Nasim who is also the Presidium
Member of Awami League (AL).

He said while addressing a meeting of the 14-party at the Awami League
central office on Bangabandhu Avenue.

Criticising the Election Commission (EC)’s directives which directed that
the members of parliament cannot seek votes for the candidates, he said “It
is very sad that we as public representatives cannot seek votes for the party
candidates of the city corporation polls. It is illogical.”

Former MPs can conduct election campaign but the incumbent ones are not
able to do so which does not define the level-playing field, he said.

“Where the election campaign is being held with party symbol, why we cannot
able to carry out campaign in favour of the party candidates?” he asked.

Senior leaders of BNP are able to seek votes for their respective
candidates in the election campaign, Nasim said adding: “We have accepted the
matter as EC has directives in this regard.”

With Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua in the
chair, the meeting was attended, among others, by AL central leader and
former Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Birbikram, Jatiya
Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) President Hasanul Haq Inu, State Minister for
information Dr Murad Hasan and 14-party alliance leaders S K Shikdar and Dr
Shahadat Hossain.
