DHAKA, Aug 7, 2017 (BSS) – The fourth meeting of the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) between Bangladesh and Thailand will begin here on Wednesday aiming to boost bilateral trade and investment.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed will lead the Bangladesh side at the two-day meeting while his Thai counterpart Apiradi Tantraporn will head the Thai team, according to a commerce ministry release.

The ministerial meeting on Wednesday will be preceded by a secretary-level meeting where Commerce Secretary Shubhashish Bose and Director General of the Department of Trade Negotiation of Thai Commerce Ministry Boonyarit Kalayanamit will lead their respective sides.

The third meeting of the JTC was held in the Thai capital of Bangkok in 2013.

Besides reviewing ways to strengthen the trade relations further between the two countries, the release said, Thai investors will be encouraged to invest in Bangladesh at the fourth JTC meeting. A Thai business delegation is expected to join the JTC meeting.

Bangladesh will offer to establish a special economic zone for the Thai investors while Thailand will be requested for special duty-free access of few Bangladeshi products to its market to narrow the existing trade deficit.

On the first day of the JTC, the implementation progress of the decision of the third JTC meeting will be discussed.

A joint press conference will be held on Thursday at Sonargaon Hotel at 5pm, the release said.
