Language movement veteran Rawshan Ara Bachchu passes away

DHAKA, Dec 3, 2019 (BSS) – Language movement veteran Rawshan Ara Bachchu died of old- age complications this morning at a hospital in the city.

She was 87.

Rawshan Ara breathed her last around 10.15 am at Apollo Hospitals in the capital, said her daughter Tahmida Khatun.

She said Rawshan Ara will be buried at her family graveyard at Uchlapara village under Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar district tomorrow.

The body will be taken to Uchlapara following the third namaz-e-janaza after Esha prayers at her (Tahmida) residence at West Monipur in the city.

Earlier, the first and second namaz-e-janazas of Rawshan Ara were held at Bangla Academy and the Central Mosque of Dhaka University (DU) in the city respectively.

Born in 1932, Rawshan Ara Bachchu was a Bangladeshi activist and awarded Anannya Top Ten Awards in 2009. She took part in Bengali Language Movement in 1952.

Bachchu was a student of Brojomohun College. In 1947, at the initiative of the university students and Tamaddun Majlish, she along with 7 or 8 other students formed the State Language Action Council.

She got involved in the politics of Gonotantrik Pragotishil Chhatra Front (Democratic Progressive Student Front) in 1950 after getting admitted into the University of Dhaka. She took part in the meeting held in Amtola at the University of Dhaka on January 30, 1952 to protest Prime Minister Khawaja Nazimuddin’s declaration to make Urdu the sole language of Pakistan on January 27.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Rawshan Ara Bachchu.

In separate condolence messages, they prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Bachchu and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman and deputy leader of the opposition in Parliament GM Quader, State Minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today also condoled the death of Bachchu.

Besides, different socio-cultural and political organizations including ‘Amra Muktijoddhar Shantan’ expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Rawshan Ara Bachchu.
