Gov works for environmental protection, achieving SDGs: Razzaque

DHAKA, Nov 27, 2019 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque today said that the Awami League (AL) led government is working to protect environment from pollution and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Awami League has vowed to take projects to protect environment in its election manifesto and now the government is working hard to address the ecological challenges and ensure food security. Bangladesh is stepping forward to achieve SDG goals without any compromise.” the minister stated.

Razzaque came up with the comments while addressing a two-day long international conference on “Environmental Solution for Sustainable Development: Towards Developed Bangladesh” at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU).

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the event organised by the Forest and Environment Affairs Sub-Committee of Bangladesh Awami League.

Chairman of the sub-committee Prof. Dr. Khondoker Bazlul Hoque presided over the inaugural session while former Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, climate change specialist Professor Ainun Nishat, AL Office Secretary Dr. Abdus Sobhan Golap, Prof Dr. Md. Aftab Ali Shaikh, AL Forests and Environment Affairs Secretary Delwar Hossain, among others, addressed the conference.

Razzaque said that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led government has already taken pragmatic measures to make Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty.

He urged the young generation to play an effective role in making the country free from all sorts of pollutions.

He stressed the need for protection of environment properly to ensure food security and nutrition in the country.

Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman urged the political and academic leaders as well as environmental scientists to work jointly to make our environment clean and tidy.

He stressed the need for stopping black carbon emission from vehicles and industries to ensure healthy environment and achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Environmental scientists from different countries, including host Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, South Korea, USA and Austria are participating in the conference.
