Cyclone Bulbul not causing major damage in coastal areas: Enamur

DHAKA, Nov 10, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Disaster Management and
Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman today said cyclone ‘Bulbul’ did not cause major
damage in the country’s coastal areas due to the prompt initiative of the
government.

“As part of the immediate response, for the first time in the country’s
history, more than 21.6 lakh people were successfully evacuated and moved to
5,587 cyclone shelters in coastal districts as the cyclone hit the region,”
Enamur told the newsmen at a press briefing regarding the latest situation of
the cyclone.

The authorities made adequate contingency plan to deal with possible
destruction in the coastal areas due to the cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’.

“Around four to five thousand houses were damaged partially and completely
as ‘Bulbul’ lashed the country’s coastlines early today”, the state minister
said.

It (Bulbul) is still crossing Bangladesh, but has already weakened. We
hope that the weather will become normal by Monday, he added.

“The low over the Bay of Bengal turned into cyclone ‘Bulbul’ on Thursday.
The maritime port signal no. 4 given on Friday was extended to great danger
signal no. 10 the next day…It started crossing the coastal areas around 9pm
on Saturday”, he said.

“It entered into Bangladesh through Sundarbans and has already crossed
Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat. The wind speed right now is 40-90kmph, which
is relatively low than that of Sidor or Aila which was approximately 220-
250kmph”, he told the journalists.
