Shipping Ministry prepares Tk 1,137cr project for Paturia- Daulatdia ferry
ghat

DHAKA, Nov 3, 2019 (BSS) – The Ministry of Shipping has prepared a Taka
1,137 crore Development Project Proposal (DPP) to check river erosion at
Daulatdia and Paturia ferry ghats besides protecting the river banks and
improving the standards of passenger services.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will implement the
project, under which eight new ferry ghats would be set up alongside river
bank protection work of six kilometers at Daulatdia and river bank protection
work of 2 kilometers at Paturia, said a Shipping Ministry press release.

It said the ghats would be set up at low-water, mid-water and hi-water
levels and additional allocations will be provided for protecting the ghats
at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat area.

This was informed at a meeting at the Shipping Ministry today with State
Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.

The meeting formed a five-member committee with Ministry Additional
Secretary Anal Chandra Das as its convenor. The committee will take effective
steps to reach a permanent solution to protect the ghats from erosion at
Daulatdia.

The other members of the committee are Water Resources Ministry Joint
Secretary M Motahar Hossain and representatives from the IWM, CEGIS and
BIWTA.

The BIWTA sought Taka 11 crore additional fund in the current fiscal year
to conduct the river bank protection works at Daulatdia Ferry ghat and
adjacent areas and reconstructing the ferry ghats.

Shipping Secretary M Abdus Samad, Water Resources Ministry Joint Secretary
M Motahar Hossain, BIWTA Chairman Commodore M Mahbub ul Islam, deputy
commissioner of Rajbari Dilshad Begum, deputy commissioner of Manikganj SM
Ferdous, and concerned engineers from the Bangladesh Water Development Board
and BIWTA, were present, among others, in the meeting.
