7 get life for killing shrimp trader in Khulna

KHULNA, May 31, 2018 (BSS) – A court here today sentenced seven people for life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a shrimp trader murder case at Dumuria upazila in the district in 2006.

Judge of the Special Divisional Judge Court S M Abdus Salam pronounced the verdict in presence of two accused. They are Pradeep Shaha and Shuvash Biswas.

The remained five convicted who are absconding since the murder are Bikash Biswas, Kartik Biswas, Tapon Shikder, Motilal Shikder and Ramen Biswas of Dumuria.

The court acquitted 13 people as the prosecution could not success to prove allegation brought against them.

The court also fined Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer two more months RI.

Quoting the case, prosecution lawyear Farid Ahmed told newsmen, that Bharat Sardar, son of Avimunue Sarder of Uttar Pabla village of Daulatpur thana in the city began shrimp cultivation along with Fisheries Cooperative Society by leasing 161 acres of land (Jalmahal) in 2006.

An influential group of the area also tried to lease the same Jalmahal. On July 18, 2006, both the group attended a meeting on the night at the residence of Mukunda Nath Biswas in the area in a view to mitigate the issue.

The convicted equipped with arms, sharp weapon and sticks attacked on Bharat Sarder and his men around 11.00pm.

At one stage, they gunned down Sukumar Biswas, cousin of Bharat Sarder. Sukumar was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.

Bharat Sarder filed a case against 12 named and 10-15 unnamed people with Dumuria Police Station in this connection.

Sub Inspector Sawpon Kumar Das of the Dumuria PS, who was also the investigation officer of the case, pressed charge sheet accusing 20 people including the seven convicts.
