Khulna mayor lauds Kolkata journos to contribute to independence war

KHULNA, Oct 25, 2019 (BSS) – Recalling the contributions of the journalists of Kolkata to the War of Liberation of Bangladesh, Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque on Thursday said their role will be written in golden letters in history.

“We are grateful to India . . . the contributions of the journalists of Kolkata will ever be remembered as they gathered news and published those during the war with courage,” the mayor said at a discussion at circuit house auditorium in Khulna.

Khulna TV Reporters Unity and Khulna District Administration jointly organized the discussion on a book named ‘Bangladesher Muktijuddho: Kolkatar Sangbadikra o Press Club Kolkata’ with deputy commissioner Md Helal Hossain in the chair.

Kolkata Press Club president (KPC), who is also the author, and Snehasis Sur, who compiled the book, attended the function.

Talukder Abdul Khaleque said around one crore Bangladeshi had taken shelter in India during the War of Liberation in 1971. “Bangladeshi people were happy when the Indian Army entered into Bangladesh to fight against Pakistani occupied forces,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University Professor Dr Md Fayequzzaman, taking part in the discussion on the book, said it is most important to keep the history of elderly journalists in written form. And this book did it, he added.

Congratulating the Khulna People as well as local administration, journalists and elite for according him a cordial reception, the KPC president Sur hailed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her contributions for marching Bangladesh towards a developed country.

He also thanked information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud as he unveiled the book at the KPC on its 75th founding anniversary on September 14, 2019.

He said that the information minister gave them assurance of extending overall cooperation for publishing the second edition of the book.

Assistant High Commissioner of India in Khulna Rajesh Raina, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Habibul Haque Khan and Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) Nischinta Kumar Poddar, ADC (General) Ziaur Rahman, Khulna city unit Muktijoddha commander professor Alamgir Kabir, President of Khulna union of Journalists(KUJ) Mahbub Alam Sohag and general secretary of Swadhinata Sangbadik Forum S M Zahid Hossain, among others, spoke at the discussion.

Later, different organizations including TV Reporters Association and KUJ awarded Snehasis Sur with crests and other gifts.
