Sheikh Hasina has invited her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to visit Bangladesh next year marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the secretary said.

In reply, Modi hinted that he might come to Bangladesh for the celebration.

The secretary added that seven issues– Rohingya, water sharing, security, blue economy, National Registration of Citizens (NRC), connectivity, business and trade, education, youth and culture– prominently featured in the discussion.

About India’s stance on NRC, Shahidul said that the Indian Prime Minister reassured Bangladesh that it is an internal matter of India.

Describing Bangladesh’s relations with India as extremely warm and friendly, he said “But, we are keeping our eyes open.”

Both the premiers stressed the need for joint efforts to cut terrorism in the region, the secretary said.

About connectivity, he said that the two leaders talked about the strengthening of both the mental and physical connectivity for boosting trade and commerce. He also said, “The Indian prime minister assured Bangladesh regarding Teesta water sharing that it will happen soon.”

Shahidul added that the two leaders are now looking at sharing water of six other common rivers which will also ensure benefit to the people of both the countries and ensure sustainable use of water.

He said the two leaders also stressed the need for unlocking the potential of blue economy, jointly.

About the call on of Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said that the Indian minister said they had a policy of accommodation not only in India but also with other countries.
