Three to walk gallows for killing 4 children in Habiganj

DHAKA, July 26, 2017 (BSS) – A Sylhet court today sentenced three people to death and two others to seven-year imprisonment each in case lodged over brutal murder of four children in Bahubal upazila in Habiganj last year.

Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Md Makbul Ahsan pronounced the judgement in the crowded courtroom with some of the accused in the dock.

“The court handed down death to Rubel Miah, Arju Miah and Ustar Ali. Of the three Ali is yet to be arrested. The three were also fined Taka 10 thousand each.

The court sentenced Jewel Miah and Shahed to seven-year imprisonment and fined them Taka five thousand each,” said state counsel advocate Kishore Kumar Kar.

The main accused in case Bacchu Miah has earlier been killed in a gunfight with RAB. The court in the meantime, acquitted Abdul Ali Bagal, Babul Miah and Billal from the charges.

Both the state and the defence have expressed discontent over the judgment, saying they have been deprived of justice and will file appeal at the High Court against the verdict.

“We have been able to prove our case beyond any reasonable doubt but the court did not sentence all the accused to maximum punishment. They deserve only death,” said advocate Kar.

Four schoolboys Monir Miah, 7, Jakaria Ahmed Shuvo, 8, Tajel Miah, 10, and Ismail Hossain, 10, disappeared as they went on to play in the field in their village Sundratiki under Bahubal upazila on February 12, 2016. Of the four, Shuvo and Tajel were cousins.

Their decomposed bodies were recovered five days later buried under sand in a local low land. Monir’s father Abdal Miah filed a case against nine with Bahubal Police Station in this regard and investigation officer and then DB inspector Moktadir Hossain submitted charge sheet against the nine.

According to the case documents, the monstrous crime took place following the dispute between Abdal Miah Talukder and his group and Abdul Ali Bagal and his group in the village.Bagal his sons Rubel, Jewel and their goons committed the crimes to take revenge on Talukder and his men.
